Review by Chisato Hara: Finding One's Paradise Within Australian writer finds her creative renaissance in Bali |
Singer strikes creative gold in Bandung Jan Cornall couldn't believe her luck when she turned up to the Opulence Lounge in Bandung earlier this year to watch Imel Rosalin play. She was searching for a jazz musician to work with on melodies she had composed for poems by Sitok Srengenge and Dewi Lestari had mentioned her sister Imel may be able to help. Jan watched Imel play a few numbers and in the break she explained what she wanted to do. Imel's reply was, “Ok, when do you want to start. . . tomorrow?” They worked on the songs for three days then went straight into the studio. Jan left to work on other projects and Imel continued working with fellow Bandung musicians, creating the poetic jazz feel for the album Singing Srengenge. “Imel is a fantastic musician,” says Jan, "and a wonderful person. I have been searching for some one like Imel for years to work with.” “I compose vocally but I don't read or write music and the rhythms I create don't always sit in straightforward musical time. I needed someone who could understand and work with the poetic nuance of Sitok’s poetry and my jazz melodies.”
