Cross Cultural Arts Collaboration - A Positive Step in an Uncertain World Singer & writer Jan Cornall believes that cross-cultural collaboration is a positive step in today's world: "In the current world climate of political and geophysical uncertainty, it is more important than ever for artists to cross physical and cultural borders to create work together. Collaborating in this way, we not only get to know and support one other's creative work, but also exchange valuable cultural information that leads to a greater understanding of the real worlds we inhabit." Jan is no stranger to collaboration. She has worked collaboratively in Australia in theatre, film and music productions for over 25 years with many different artists and communities. Since 2004 when she first met Indonesian writers at the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival, Jan began an ongoing collaboration with poet Sitok “Creating art together is like creating a new language that doesn't require translation and interpretation,” Jan explains, “in this way we transcend the limitations of perceived difference to create a place of being together that is not only exhilarating and satisfying, but has relevance to the communities we represent.” Jan plans to continue working with Indonesian artists in the future in Indonesia and Australia.
