Cornall launches fruits of collaboration First printed in the Jakarta Post, Sunday October 1, 2006 Australian writer, performer and musician Jan Cornall launched her first work of prose, Take Me to Paradise, published by Bali-based Saritaksu Editions, and her new CD, Jan Cornall Singing Srengenge, at the Lamak restaurant during the ongoing Ubud literary festival. It was a festive event with many people from all over Indonesia, Australia, Asia and America in attendance, who regaled on wine and hors d'oeuvres under the stars. "I dedicate this book to all of my Balinese friends," said Cornall at the launch. "This book is really about them and all those people who come to Bali and fall in love." "This feeling shouldn't be disturbed by terrorism or threats of terrorism," she added, perhaps in reference to the first anniversary of the Oct 2, 2005 bombing in Bali, which preceded last year's festival. Cornall also expressed her gratitude to the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival, for creating "a space for writers, readers and lovers of literature to come together". "This is only one of the fruits of the collaborations that have come out of the festival," she stressed. Cornall also read a scene from her novella - a humorous account of her main character, Marilyn, conversing with two kebaya (traditional blouse) sellers about the sex lives of Balinese women. She finished her reading as Marilyn arrives back in Australia after five magical days inBali and is confronted by the news of the Bali bombing -- something of which she was totally unaware. Cornall also entertained the audience with a live performance of two songs from Singing Srengenge, her musical response to the work of Sitok Srengenge, a prolific Indonesian poet. "For me, music and writing are interwoven," said Cornall, adding, "I also have plans to produce a CD to accompany my novel Take Me to Paradise." First printed in the Jakarta Post.
