By Sarita Newson
Illustrated by children in five remote East Bali villages

Based on the best 103 of thousands of full-colour paintings created by children from East Bali Poverty Project area between the years 2001 and 2005, The Art of Learning by Doing represents a wonderful chronicle of a traditional community’s struggle to carve out a sustainable future for itself. Seventy-eight of the works are by boys and twenty-five by girls.

This simple, touching, story -- written by Sarita Newson, edited by David Booth, and translated by Kadek Krishna Adidharma -- tells the true story of the children from before they started school to when they graduated, through the voices of three fictitious characters. The book is designed as a resource for children, parents and teachers with simple lessons on introducing health, nutrition, organic vegetable gardening and other life skills to children in practical, meaningful and enjoyable ways.

At the time of publishing this book, in 2005, the children were already becoming expert trainers in land improvement and erosion control and many of their parents participating in East Bali Poverty Project’s farming cooperatives to stabilise terraces with Vetiver grass, fertilize with organic worm castings and grow new varieties of vegetables, passing on their seeds to new groups at the end of their first year.

New horizons and prospects for the future are opening up every day, with the confidence the children are gaining in the fields of Art, Writing, Theatre and their experience in Organic Gardening. Food security, self reliance and sustainable social and economic development are all now within reach of these isolated communities that only six short years ago had no communication with the outside world and did not believe that life could ever change.

Sponsored by The Annika Linden Foundation, The Art of Learning by Doing is already in its second print-run. Published bilingually in both English and Indonesian, the book is purchased by people wishing to share its simple yet powerful message with children and grandchildren, and by generous donors who buy copies for distribution in rural villages across Bali and the rest of Indonesia.

About the Author, Sarita Newson

Born in New Zealand, Sarita has made Bali her home since 1973, becoming an Indonesian citizen in 1975 and worked as a writer and editor for various publications on the island part-time, in addition to positions held within the travel industry and for airlines, prior to setting up the Design and Communications company that has in recent years started publishing under the logo of Saritaksu Editions.

David Booth MBE (editor of the book and founder of the East Bali Poverty Project)

A native of north-west England, David chose Indonesia as his adopted home in 1989. In 1998, he decided to give something back by using his diverse experience in civil engineering, marketing, teaching and writing to help the most impoverished regions in Bali on a path towards sustainable social and economic development, prioritising children’s health, education and nutrition. Since founding the East Bali Poverty Project in 1998, his foundation has educated over 400 children, 96 of which had graduated primary school by July 2005. Safe water and community health projects, prioritising mothers and children, have benefited over 2,000 families and the whole region now looks forward to a brighter future led by their newly empowered children. David’s MBE award in 2004 was in recognition of his “Services to Sustainable Rural Development in East Bali, Indonesia.”
