Specifications Size : 25 cm x 32.5 cm, 136 pages, 22 color plates, The Author, Victor Neville Mason Victor Mason, the author of BUTTERFLIES OF BALI, was born and educated in England. As a very young man he went to Hong Kong where he lived and worked for about twelve years, before taking a holiday in Bali in 1969. He found it very difficult to leave the island, and, excepting the odd brief interval, has remained here ever since. At home in the fields near the village of Penestanan Ubud., he spends his time watching birds and butterflies, and writing books of which he has produced a fair number, mostly concerning nature, historical biography, and oral tradition. (“Birds of Bali”, “Bali Bird Walks”, “Balinese Children’s Favorite Stories”, “Butterflies of Bali” (the novel), “Malaucène”, “Silih Dalih Tale of Bali” and “The Haughty Toad”) The illustrator, Pink Born in Penestanan, Ubud, in 1974, I Ketut Laksana has always been known as "Pink". As a young man he did an apprenticeship as a guide with Bali Bird Walks, the nature rambles through the countryside that were founded by Victor Mason and managed by his sister Su (Ni Wayan Sumadi). This brought Pink into the realm of the naturalist. Victor soon remarked upon his very sharp eye, and discovered he was able to pick out and identify "every living thing in sight". Pink also developed a latent talent for drawing what he saw. Starting off with a series of bird portraits, and he soon branched out to butterflies and insects, and the series of butterfly paintings published in "Butterflies of Bali" are masterpieces of exquisitely detailed work, picturing each butterfly in its actual size and native habitat, and capturing the tiniest details of markings in vivid colour that is so delicately textured that it seems to be three-dimensional as if the butterflies are alive.
