In The Arms of The Angels’ is the true story of a medical volunteer who recounts the first traumatic days following the bombing of a busy Kuta nightspot in Bali, that claimed hundreds of lives, and wounded many more.
Kim Patra, an expatriate nurse, was but one of a massive group of volunteers and professionals who tackled the multi-faceted challenge following this tragic event. She writes this poignant account through the eyes of a health professional, an expatriate, a woman and a mother.
Walk with her through the wards and corridors of the Sanglah General Hospital where she battles a mire of internal emotions to maintain her professional commitment: where an eclectic mix of culture, medicine, religion and ethnicity are thrown together in the turmoil of shock, grief and immense horror. Witness the countless reports of those who walked out of their ordinary lives to perform the most extraordinary tasks, rising to the massive challenge that ensued.
Kim tells it all with empathy, humor, tragedy, and grace as she salutes her colleagues, her peers, and her patients. ‘In the Arms of the Angels’ is a fitting tribute to all who were involved.
On the morning of October 13th 2002, Kim, along with other health professional and volunteers stepped out of their lives to assist the victims of the atrocious bombing that had occurred on the previous evening. For many of the unskilled volunteers at the hospital. Kim’s presence and guidance gave them purpose and direction. This book tells a story of that time, a story of the courage and commitment by so many there”.
About the Author:
Kim Patra, British born and Australian raised, has spent the best part of her adult years on the sleepy tropical island of Bali. Kim is a mother of there, a nurse, a midwife, and a writer and very few long-term expatriates will have not had cause to call upon Kim’s expertise at some time or another. It was not so long ago that health information of any kind on this island was hard to come by. If there was a health concern, Kim was the one to call. She has been there for us all through so much – pregnancies, broken bones, and all other nature of ills. Kim has always brought a sense of humor, and calm reassurance to even the most traumatic situations.
