Made Djelantik Against All Odds – The Strange Destiny of a Balinese Prince This delicately rendered collection of stories by accomplished writer Idanna Pucci takes its inspiration from a series a watercolours by the protagonist, Dr. A.A. Made Djelantik. Tales of daring and adventure, stories of his ancestors, his childhood in the royal palace of Karangasem East Bali and his work in far-flung foreign territories, are all coloured with the magic touch of genuine altruism. This book is about a prince born into one of Bali’s eight ancient kingdoms – which allowed him the privilege of education not available to others at that time – and his amazing life experiences. It is told in 193 pages in both English and Indonesian and illustrated by the prince himself. “Against All Odds” is inspirational. These marvelous tales and paintings carry messages of unconditional honesty and loyalty that empower the human spirit in dangerous times, and demonstrate the healing quality of art. About the hero, Dr. A.A. Made Djelantik Dr. A.A. Made Djelantik grew up in his father’s palace in Bali, an island pervaded with ancient beliefs and superstition. As a child, he was constantly reminded of the presence of unseen forces around him, good and evil. His formal education was received at the first Dutch school in Bali, and he continued his high school in Java, and went on to medical school at the University of Amsterdam, graduating in 1946, with a specialization in tropical medicine. After serving as Chief Medical Officer in Bali from 1957-1969 he then, as an expert on malaria, worked for ten years with the World Health Organization. He started the Faculty of Medicine at Udayana University of Bali, and was the director of the Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar from 1959-1969. Dr. Djelantik also served as chairman of Bali’s Council for Cultural Affairs from 1960-1969 and remained a member of it until 1997. He was the founder of ASTI, the famed Dance Academy of Bali, and a chairman of the Wakter Spies Foundation from 1981 – 1999. He is the author of Balinese Painting (Oxford University Press, 1968), his autobiography, The Birthmark: Memoirs of a Balinese Prince was published by Periplus in 1997. Dr. Djelantik continued his medical practice untl 1999 and then, after a life-threatening illness, he began to paint the stories from his life, encouraged by Idanna Pucci who perceived them as modern fables that would inspire generations to come. About the Author, Idanna Pucci Since leaving her ancestral home in Florence, Italy, Idanna pursued her interest in diverse cultures through far-flung journeys and exploration. Varius writing assignments for the Hongkong based Asia Magazine enabled her to travel throughout the Indonesian Archipelago, Thailand, Laos, Nepal, Malaysia, Vietnam, Japan and across the Soviet Union on the last steam engine of the Trans-Siberian railway. During her studies in Comparative Literature at Columbia University, she became intrigued by the Court of Justice in the ancient royal capital of Bali. Its 144 ceiling-paintings narrated a sacred epic hauntingly similar to Dante’s Divine Comedy.
